Shuttlers, a leading Nigerian mobility startup, is taking bold steps toward sustainable transport. In the first quarter of 2025, the company added 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered buses to its fleet. This move highlights Shuttlers’ growing commitment to providing eco-friendly and cost-effective commuting options for Nigerians.
In just three months, Shuttlers completed 1,484 trips using its new CNG powered vehicles. According to Damilola Olokesusi, the CEO and Co-founder, the decision to adopt CNG was driven by a deeper purpose beyond profit. “This change is not just good for business,” she explained, “it’s about doing what’s right for our riders and the environment.”
The results are already impressive. The switch to CNG has led to a 29% reduction in transportation costs for riders and a significant decrease in CO₂ emissions.
Why CNG and Why Now?
Nigeria’s shift toward CNG is gaining momentum, especially following the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023 and a sharp rise in petrol prices. With petrol now unaffordable for many, CNG offers a viable and cleaner alternative, priced at just ₦230 per litre.
While there are growing concerns about the safety of converted CNG vehicles, Shuttlers has taken strong measures to ensure the safety of passengers. Their CNG canisters are fireproof, include automatic fire extinguishers, and all vehicles undergo regular inspections to maintain strict safety standards.
Founded in 2016 in Lagos, Shuttlers set out to solve the city’s transport challenges. Since then, it has:
- Expanded operations beyond Lagos
- Raised $5.6 million in funding
- Become a top transport choice for corporate workers across Nigeria
