The Journey Of Thrive Agric: Supporting Farmers with Tech, Finance & Markets

    • March 28, 2025
    Thrive Agric Founder Uka Eje

Agriculture is the backbone of Africa’s economy, yet smallholder farmers often struggle with financing, productivity, and access to markets. Thrive Agric, a fast-growing AgriTech startup, is on a mission to change that. Through technology-driven solutions, financing, and strategic partnerships, the company is empowering farmers and ensuring food security across the continent.

    How Thrive Agric Started

Thrive Agric was founded in 2017 by Uka Eje and Ayodeji Arikawe with a bold vision, to build an Africa that feeds itself and the world. The founders saw the challenges faced by smallholder farmers and believed technology could bridge the gap. With a focus on impact, scale, and innovation, they set out to create a platform that would provide farmers with financing, training, and access to premium markets.

    Growth and Milestones

From a small startup with a big dream, Thrive Agric has grown into one of Africa’s leading AgriTech companies. Over the years, the company has achieved significant milestones:

    • Farmer Network Expansion: Thrive Agric has worked with over 820,000 smallholder farmers across 22 Nigerian states, helping them access financing and improve productivity.
    • Financial Investment: The company has facilitated over $100 million in financing for farmers, enabling them to scale their operations and increase yields.
    • Food Production: Thrive Agric-supported farmers have collectively produced more than 2.3 million metric tonnes of grains, contributing to Africa’s food supply chain.

How Thrive Agric Works: A Tech-Driven Approach

Thrive Agric operates at the intersection of technology, finance, and agriculture, offering a holistic solution to farming challenges.

    1. Access to Finance

One of the biggest barriers for African farmers is lack of funding. Thrive Agric connects farmers with capital through innovative financing models, including crowdfunding and partnerships with banks. This ensures they have the resources needed for successful farming seasons.

    2. Data-Driven Farming

The company’s proprietary Agricultural Operating System (AOS) provides farmers with real-time data on soil conditions, weather patterns, and best practices. This technology-driven approach helps them make better decisions, increase yields, and reduce waste.

    3. Market Access

Thrive Agric goes beyond just farming, it helps farmers sell their produce at fair prices by linking them directly to local and global markets. By cutting out middlemen, farmers earn more, and food supply chains become more efficient.

    Funding and Strategic Partnerships

Thrive Agric’s impact has been fueled by strategic investments and collaborations:

    • Funding: In 2022, the company secured $56.4 million in debt funding from commercial banks and institutional investors. It also received a $1.75 million co-investment grant from USAID’s West Africa Trade & Investment Hub to expand into markets like Ghana, Zambia, and Kenya.
    • Partnerships: Thrive Agric has partnered with global organizations like Visa to enhance financial inclusion for farmers and scale its operations. They also partnered with Acorn-Rabobank to empower over 30,000 smallholder farmers across 9 Nigerian states while combating climate change.

    Overcoming Challenges

Like any startup, Thrive Agric has faced hurdles. In 2020, the company encountered cash flow issues due to economic downturns. However, through resilience and strategic restructuring, it secured new funding, improved operations, and emerged stronger. This adaptability has been key to its sustained growth.

    Awards and Recognitions

Thrive Agric’s innovation and impact have not gone unnoticed. The company has received several prestigious accolades:

    • AYuTe Africa Challenge 2022 Winner: Recognized by Heifer International for its role in scaling food security.
    • Visa Everywhere Initiative 2022 Winner: Thrive Agric won both the overall and Visa Direct awards for payment innovation.
    • Financial Times Recognition: Named one of Africa’s fastest-growing companies in 2024.
    • African Business CEO Summit (2018): Co-founder and CEO Uka Eje was named one of the Top 5 CEOs.
    • Future Award for Agriculture (2019): Recognized for contributions to Africa’s agricultural transformation.
    • Africa’s 40 Under 40 Business Icons (2023): Uka Eje’s leadership and impact earned him a place on this prestigious list.
    • Guardian Spotlight (2023): Named among “Nigeria’s Most Innovative and Leading Drivers of Food Security.”

Thrive Agric is a movement towards sustainable and profitable farming in Africa. By continuously innovating and expanding, the company is helping smallholder farmers become key players in the global food industry. With ambitious plans to scale across Africa, Thrive Agric is shaping the future of agriculture and ensuring that the continent not only feeds itself but contributes to global food security.
